--- title: "The best Tavily alternatives in 2026 (an honest comparison)" category: "comparisons" url: https://keirolabs.cloud/blog/tavily-alternatives-2026 --- ## The 60-second version We build Keirolabs, and the numbers below say it is the best deal in this comparison. Every figure comes from the vendors' own pricing pages, pulled in September 2026, so you can check all of them. The summary: - **Tavily is good and it is not cheap.** Basic search costs 1 credit at $0.008/credit pay-as-you-go, which is **$8.00 per 1,000 searches**. Advanced search is 2 credits, **$16.00 per 1,000** ([Tavily docs](https://docs.tavily.com/documentation/api-credits)). The free tier is real: 1,000 credits every month, no card ([tavily.com/pricing](https://www.tavily.com/pricing)). - **Tavily is no longer independent.** Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS) announced an agreement to acquire it on February 10, 2026 ([Nebius newsroom](https://nebius.com/newsroom/nebius-announces-agreement-to-acquire-tavily-to-add-agentic-search-to-its-ai-cloud-platform)). Pricing hasn't changed since. Think twice before wiring an agent's core retrieval primitive to a company mid-absorption. - **You can replace Tavily for less money and get better results.** On AIMultiple's 2026 agentic search benchmark, Keiro scored 15.2 of 20, first place, ahead of Brave (14.89), Firecrawl (14.58), Exa (14.39), and Tavily (13.67) ([aimultiple.com](https://aimultiple.com)). On price, Parallel's Search API runs $0.001–$0.005 per request ([parallel.ai/pricing](https://www.parallel.ai/pricing)), Brave is a flat $5.00 per 1,000 requests off its own 30-billion-page index ([brave.com/search/api](https://brave.com/search/api/)), Exa is $7.00 per 1,000 search requests ([Exa docs](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing)), and Keiro's /search/lite endpoint bills at $0.25 per 1,000 headline, dropping to $0.08–$0.24 per 1,000 on monthly plans ([keirolabs.cloud/pricing](https://keirolabs.cloud/pricing)). - **The cheapest options scrape Google.** Serper costs about $1.00 per 1,000 queries at its smallest pack ([ColdIQ's verified breakdown](https://coldiq.com/blog/serper-pricing)); SerpApi starts at $25.00 per 1,000 ([serpapi.com/pricing](https://serpapi.com/pricing)). Both sell you Google's work. That's cheap until the day it stops working. One paragraph of advice, if you stop reading here: keep Tavily's free tier for prototyping, and put production traffic on an API that publishes its per-unit price, owns its pipeline, and wins the public benchmarks. If you want the full reasoning, it's below, with receipts. ## What Tavily actually costs in 2026 Tavily's pricing is a credit system, and the credit system is where bills surprise people. The headline "1,000 free credits/month" is genuine. It resets on the first of each month, no credit card required, and there's a separate free program for students ([tavily.com/pricing](https://www.tavily.com/pricing)). It's one of the better evaluation tiers in the category. Past the free tier, here is what each request costs in credits, straight from [Tavily's API credits doc](https://docs.tavily.com/documentation/api-credits): | Tavily request | Credits | Cost at $0.008/credit (pay-as-you-go) | |---|---|---| | Basic search (1 credit) | 1 | $8.00 per 1,000 | | Advanced search (2 credits) | 2 | $16.00 per 1,000 | | Basic extract | 1 per URL | $8.00 per 1,000 URLs | | Advanced extract | 2 per request | $16.00 per 1,000 | | Crawl (10 pages, advanced) | 5 | $40.00 per 1,000 pages | Pay-as-you-go is $0.008 per credit. Monthly plans bring the per-credit rate down to $0.0075–$0.005. The $5/1,000-searches figure you see in listicles exists only on the biggest monthly commitment, and it applies to basic search, which most agents outgrow the moment they start reading pages. That last part is the trap. Basic search returns snippets. Agents that actually complete tasks need page content, which pushes you to advanced parameters, and the per-search price doubles. Keirolabs has run Tavily in its own benchmarks; it's a well-built product. It is simply the most expensive agent-ready search API per unit in this comparison, and since February it's also a Nebius company. Both facts belong in your decision. ## The field on one page Every row below comes from the vendor's own pricing page or docs, checked September 2026. "Index" is the question most comparisons skip: where do the results actually come from? | API | Price per 1,000 searches | Free tier | Index | Output | |---|---|---|---|---| | [Tavily](https://www.tavily.com/pricing) | $8.00 basic / $16.00 advanced (PAYG, $0.008/credit) | 1,000 credits/mo, no card | Hybrid crawl + re-rank (proprietary pipeline) | Ranked results + cleaned page content | | [Exa](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing) | $7.00 (search with token-efficient contents) | $20 signup + $10/mo credits | Own index: web, people, company, scholarly | Results + contents, neural + keyword | | [Brave Search](https://brave.com/search/api/) | $5.00 flat | $5 in credits/mo (≈1,000 requests); card required | Own index: 30B+ pages, ~100M updates/day | URLs, snippets, up to 5 LLM-context snippets | | [Parallel Search](https://www.parallel.ai/pricing) | $1.00–$5.00 ($0.001–$0.005/request) | 5,000 requests/mo + $5 credits/mo | Own search infra | Ranked URLs + "compressed excerpts" | | [Firecrawl Search](https://www.firecrawl.dev/pricing) | ≈$1.66 on Standard ($83/mo ÷ 50,000 searches); $5–$10 on credit top-ups | 1,000 credits/mo (500 searches), no card | Crawls live web on demand | Search + full markdown pages | | [Linkup](https://linkup.so/pricing) | $5.00–$6.00 ($0.005–$0.006/request) | 4,000 queries | Own index + web | Results, deep research at $0.25–$2.50 | | [Serper](https://coldiq.com/blog/serper-pricing) | $1.00 (smallest $50 pack) down to $0.30 at 12.5M | 2,500 queries one-time, no card | Scrapes Google (unlicensed) | Raw Google SERP JSON | | [SerpApi](https://serpapi.com/pricing) | $25.00 (Starter, 1,000 searches/mo) down to ≈$9.00 | 250 searches/mo | Scrapes Google, sells U.S. legal shield | Structured SERP data | | [Keiro /search/lite](https://keirolabs.cloud/pricing) | $0.25 headline; 0.1 credit/request on monthly plans, $0.08–$0.24 per 1,000 | 1,250 credits/mo = 12,500 searches, no card, 30 req/min | Own index + extraction pipeline | Fast results; 3-credit /extract returns full markdown | Read the "Index" column before the price column. If your agent needs results Google never ranked, new documentation pages, niche forums, PDFs behind JS, a SERP scraper can't help you at any price. ## What you pay per 1,000 searches Same numbers, drawn to scale. Cheapest at the bottom. Keiro's bar is dark; everyone else's is gray. US$ per 1,000 search requests, 10 results each, Sept 2026 list prices SerpApi (Starter) $25.00 Tavily (basic) $8.00 Exa $7.00 Brave Search $5.00 Firecrawl (Std.) ≈$1.66 Serper ($50 pack) $1.00 Parallel (low end) $1.00–$5.00 Keiro /search/lite $0.25 Dark bar = Keirolabs /search/lite. Sources linked in the table above. (/search/fast on Essential is $2.40 per 1,000.) Three things the chart should make you ask: 1. **What is the $17 gap between Tavily and Brave buying me?** Tavily returns cleaned page content by default; Brave returns search results and snippets. If your agent immediately fetches every result anyway, Tavily's bundling is worth something. If it reads snippets and moves on, you're paying Tavily a fetch tax. 2. **Why is SerpApi 25× Brave?** Because you're paying for Google's ranking, SerpApi's uptime against Google's bot defenses, and a legal indemnity. For agent workloads, that's usually the wrong bundle. 3. **Are the cheap rows cheap because they're bad?** No. Keiro is both the cheapest row on this chart and the top scorer on AIMultiple's 2026 agentic search benchmark, 15.2 of 20 against Tavily's 13.67. The full quality numbers are in the next section. ## Who actually wins on quality Price is only half the decision. Here are the public quality numbers, with sources. **AIMultiple agentic search benchmark, 2026 (score out of 20):** Keirolabs 15.2, first place, ahead of Brave at 14.89, Firecrawl at 14.58, Exa at 14.39, Tavily at 13.67, and Perplexity at 12.96. The most expensive API per search in the field finished fifth ([aimultiple.com](https://aimultiple.com)). **FinanceBench (financial question answering, accuracy):** Keiro 78%, first place, ahead of Valyu at 73%, Parallel at 67%, Exa at 63%, and Google at 55%. **Keirolabs' 100-query QA harness** (methodology published in [Top 8 AI search APIs, compared](https://keirolabs.cloud/blogs/comparisons/top-8-ai-search-apis-compared-2026)): SimpleQA, Keiro 94 vs Perplexity 86 vs Tavily 78. FreshQA, 91 / 83 / 77. HotpotQA, 82 / 74 / 68. **Head to head with Parallel's turbo tier:** /search/lite won 91 of 100 queries, posted a composite score of 341.6 against Parallel's 170.4, and swept 6 of 9 query archetypes. The full run is at [keiro-lite-vs-parallel-turbo](https://keirolabs.cloud/bench/keiro-lite-vs-parallel-turbo). Cheapest per search and first on the evals is an unusual combination in this category. It's the combination Keiro ships, and it's why Tavily's price tag has to be defended with something other than quality. ## The index question nobody asks "Search API" describes two different products, and the alternatives listicles never separate them. **SERP scrapers**: Serper, SerpApi. They send queries to Google, parse the response, and hand you Google's ranking. This is genuinely useful: Google's relevance is still the industry's best free lunch, and raw SERP JSON gives you position data for SEO tooling. The risks are structural. You depend on a vendor's ability to keep scraping a platform that actively defends itself, and on Google not changing its layout overnight. SerpApi answers this with contracts and a U.S. legal shield, which is partly why a Starter search costs $25.00 per 1,000 instead of $1.00 ([serpapi.com/pricing](https://serpapi.com/pricing)). Serper answers it by being cheap and fast and not talking about it much; its own public pricing page has been a 404 since at least July 2026, so pack prices live in third-party breakdowns like [ColdIQ's](https://coldiq.com/blog/serper-pricing). **Index owners**: Brave, Exa, Linkup, Parallel, and Keiro. Keiro runs its own retrieval. Brave crawls the web itself: over 30 billion pages, refreshed by more than 100 million page updates a day, plus opt-in human signal from the Web Discovery Project ([brave.com/search/api](https://brave.com/search/api/)). Exa maintains separate web, people, company, and scholarly indexes and does neural as well as keyword retrieval ([docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing)). The trade is honest: an independent index is legally boring and architecturally clean, but it can miss long-tail pages Google happens to rank. **Tavily sits between the camps.** It runs its own crawling and re-ranking pipeline rather than proxying Google, but it doesn't publish an index size the way Brave does. What you're actually buying from Tavily is the bundling: search, content extraction, and cleaning in one call, tuned for agents. That bundling is good. It's also what you're paying the $8.00 for. ## The alternatives, one paragraph each **Exa, the semantic neighbor.** $7.00 per 1,000 search requests including token-efficient page contents, extra results above 10 at $1.00 per 1,000, no subscription, pure pay-as-you-go ([docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/pricing)). Free tier: $20 on signup plus $10/month in credits, roughly 2,800 searches to start. Exa beats Tavily when your queries are conceptual ("papers that cite this method") rather than factual. Tavily beats Exa when you want cleaned full-page content per result in one predictable call. Exa is closest to Tavily in shape, which is why it's the default "Tavily alternative" answer, and why Keirolabs checked its docs instead of trusting the listicles. **Firecrawl Search, the scraper wearing a search hat.** Firecrawl's search costs 2 credits per 10 results; the Standard plan is $83/month for 100,000 credits, which works out to 50,000 searches or about $1.66 per 1,000 ([firecrawl.dev/pricing](https://www.firecrawl.dev/pricing)). The free plan gives 1,000 credits a month, 500 searches. Firecrawl's real edge is that search results arrive attached to freshly crawled markdown pages, so an agent gets content that is minutes old. On the AIMultiple benchmark Firecrawl posts a solid 14.58, ahead of Tavily's 13.67. Tavily is still cheaper per query; Firecrawl is better when freshness or a JS-heavy page is the whole point. **Parallel Search, the speed play.** The Search API is $0.001–$0.005 per request for ranked URLs with what Parallel calls "compressed excerpts", token-dense page text, synchronous in 200 ms to 3 s ([parallel.ai/pricing](https://www.parallel.ai/pricing)). Free: 5,000 requests a month plus $5 in monthly credits, with up to $80 in signup credit for qualifying startups. Parallel undercuts Tavily by 2–8× while returning page-derived text rather than raw SERP snippets. What you give up is Tavily's one-call search-plus-crawl convenience, and you give up quality: on Keirolabs' 100-query head-to-head, /search/lite beat Parallel's turbo tier on 91 of 100 queries with a composite of 341.6 to 170.4 ([full run](https://keirolabs.cloud/bench/keiro-lite-vs-parallel-turbo)). Parallel's deep end is the Task API, where deep research runs $5 to $2,400 per 1,000 requests and takes 5 seconds to 30 minutes. Different product, same company, know which one you're calling. **Serper, the cheap Google pipe.** 2,500 free queries, then prepaid packs: $50 for 50,000 queries ($1.00 per 1,000) down to $3,750 for 12.5M ($0.30 per 1,000), credits expiring after six months ([ColdIQ, verified July 2026](https://coldiq.com/blog/serper-pricing); Serper's own homepage confirms [the 2,500 free queries](https://serper.dev)). One credit buys 10 results; 11–100 results costs 2 credits. Nothing on this page is faster to evaluate, and for SERP-shaped work, rank tracking, "what does Google say", it's superb. It is not an agent search API: no content extraction, no relevance layer, and an unlicensed dependency on Google's SERP that could break your product without warning. **Brave Search API, the boring, correct choice.** $5.00 per 1,000 requests flat, with $5 in free credits every month, about 1,000 free requests, against the world's largest independent index (30B+ pages, ~100M updates/day, 50 queries/second capacity) ([brave.com/search/api](https://brave.com/search/api/)). Brave's FAQ is refreshingly blunt: it names Tavily and Exa as alternatives with "smaller indexes." You get up to five LLM-context snippets per query, SOC 2, and zero-data-retention options. What you don't get is page content. Pair it with an extraction API and you're at roughly $6 per 1,000 full research cycles, still under half of Tavily's advanced tier, and Brave's 14.89 on the AIMultiple benchmark makes it the strongest pure-index option after Keiro. **Linkup, the quiet European index.** Search runs $0.005–$0.006 per request, $5–$6 per 1,000, with a deep-research endpoint at $0.25–$2.50 per request and 4,000 free queries to start ([linkup.so/pricing](https://linkup.so/pricing)). SOC 2 everywhere, ZDR on enterprise. Linkup is a credible Tavily swap for teams with EU data-residency requirements, and its deep-research pricing undercuts Tavily's advanced search by half at the low end. The tradeoff is a smaller ecosystem: fewer integrations, smaller community, thinner docs than everything else on this list. **SerpApi, the legacy tax.** 250 free searches a month, then $25/month for 1,000 searches, $25.00 per 1,000, the most expensive row on this chart, falling to roughly $9 per 1,000 only at the $275 Big Data plan ([serpapi.com/pricing](https://serpapi.com/pricing); [ColdIQ's cross-check](https://coldiq.com/blog/serper-pricing)). What the money buys: every SERP vertical that exists, the cleanest structured output in the business, and a U.S. legal shield no unlicensed scraper matches. If you're doing SEO tooling, pay it and sleep well. If you're building an agent, this is 30–100× the price of the indexed alternatives for results your agent will re-fetch anyway. **Keiro, the price-performance leader.** /search/lite bills 0.1 credit per request on monthly plans: the Essential plan is $30/month for 12,500 credits, which is 125,000 lite searches at about $0.24 per 1,000; Pro is $50/month for 375,000 searches ($0.13 per 1,000); Startup is $100/month for 1,250,000 searches ($0.08 per 1,000). The headline pay-as-you-go rate is $0.25 per 1,000 ([keirolabs.cloud/pricing](https://keirolabs.cloud/pricing)). If you'd rather not subscribe at all, one-time packs run Starter $10 for 1,500 credits, Growth $30 for 5,000, and Scale $100 for 20,000, and packs bill lite at 0.5 credit per request, $2.50–$3.33 per 1,000, so monthly plans are the cheap path. The free tier is 1,250 credits a month, recurring, no card, 30 requests/minute: 12,500 lite searches every month, indefinitely. Other endpoints: /search/fast is 1 credit, /search/content is 3, /extract is 3 and returns full markdown, a cited /answer is 5, multi-step agentic research is 20, and /batch is 1 credit per query. We run our own retrieval and extraction pipeline and publish per-endpoint credit costs on the pricing page; the same numbers appear in this post. On quality, the record is above: 15.2/20 and first place on AIMultiple's agentic benchmark, 78% and first place on FinanceBench, and a 91/100 win rate against Parallel's turbo tier. ### Free tiers, stacked The comparison nobody runs: how much can you actually build before paying anyone? | API | Free allowance | Searches it buys | Card required? | |---|---|---|---| | [Keiro](https://keirolabs.cloud/pricing) | 1,250 credits/mo, 30 req/min | 12,500 /search/lite searches/mo, recurring | No | | [Tavily](https://www.tavily.com/pricing) | 1,000 credits/mo | ~1,000 basic searches/mo | No | | [Exa](https://exa.ai/pricing) | $20 signup + $10/mo credits | ~2,800 searches to start | No | | [Parallel](https://www.parallel.ai/pricing) | 5,000 requests/mo + $5 credits/mo | 5,000 searches/mo | No | | [Firecrawl](https://www.firecrawl.dev/pricing) | 1,000 credits/mo | 500 searches/mo | No | | [Brave](https://brave.com/search/api/) | $5 credits/mo | ~1,000 requests/mo | **Yes** | | [Linkup](https://linkup.so/pricing) | 4,000 queries | 4,000 searches | No | | [Serper](https://serper.dev) | 2,500 queries one-time | 2,500 searches, ever | No | | [SerpApi](https://serpapi.com/pricing) | 250 searches/mo | 250 searches/mo | No | Tavily's free tier is competitive: a flat 1,000 basic searches monthly, forever, no card. What it isn't is a bridge into cheap paid usage. The moment you exhaust it, the next step is $0.008/credit, the highest per-search rate on this page. Keiro's free tier is 12× larger and steps down into $0.08–$0.24 per 1,000 on plans; Brave's renews monthly without a card *if* you tolerate handing over a card number; Serper's is the best one-time evaluation batch in the category. ## How to actually choose - **Prototype (month one):** Tavily's 1,000 credits and Keiro's 12,500 both cost nothing. Use both. Whoever returns better results on *your* queries wins the eval, and no pricing table overrides that. - **Production agents that read pages:** Keiro first. It's $0.08–$0.24 per 1,000 on plans, first on AIMultiple's agentic benchmark and first on FinanceBench. Exa, Brave + an extractor, and Parallel are the next tier, all under $7 per 1,000 with owned pipelines. Tavily advanced at $16 per 1,000 needs to justify a 13.67 against Keiro's 15.2 on the same eval, and at a 65× price spread it doesn't. - **SERP-shaped data (rank tracking, SEO tools):** Serper at $1.00 per 1,000, SerpApi if the legal indemnity is the requirement. - **Fresh-scrape workloads (minutes-old content, JS-heavy pages):** Firecrawl Search, at $1.66 per 1,000 on the Standard plan. - **Compliance-bound teams:** Brave (ZDR, SOC 2) or Linkup (EU, SOC 2, ZDR on enterprise). And a migration note, since readers ask: Tavily's API shape (search returning cleaned content in one call) is now a commodity pattern. Parallel, Firecrawl, and Keiro all speak close variants of it. Most teams report the swap is an afternoon, not a quarter. Budget the afternoon for evals, not for plumbing. > The 2026 version of this decision isn't "is Tavily good?" It's "does my agent's search bill grow slower than my agent's value?" Tavily never got worse. The alternatives got specific, about index ownership, about output format, and above all about the number on the invoice. ## The boring takeaway Tavily in 2026 is a well-built, fairly expensive, recently-acquired search API: $8.00 per 1,000 basic searches pay-as-you-go, $16.00 advanced, 1,000 free credits monthly, Nebius's logo since February. Those numbers are fine for a prototype and hard to defend at scale, and the quality evals no longer bail them out: 13.67 of 20 on AIMultiple's agentic benchmark, fifth in the field, against Keiro's 15.2 at a fraction of the price. The alternatives divide cleanly: indexed APIs (Keiro $0.25 headline and $0.08–$0.24 on plans, Parallel $1–$5, Firecrawl ~$1.66, Brave $5, Exa $7) for agents that need owned pipelines and published unit prices; SERP scrapers (Serper $1, SerpApi $25) for rank data with the associated platform risk; and Tavily, which charges the most per search in the category for a bundle the cheaper indexes now match. Run your own ten queries against two of them this week. Every price in this post is from a pricing page, and the quality numbers come from named benchmarks with published methodology. Then your own queries are the only test that decides anything.
