--- title: "Google News API in 2026: what exists, RSS feeds, pricing and alternatives" category: "guides" url: https://keirolabs.cloud/blog/google-news-api --- ## The 60-second version **There is no official Google News API.** Google deprecated its News Search API in May 2011 and switched it off in February 2016. Today you have three options: - **Google News RSS feeds:** free, no key, unofficial. - **A SERP API that scrapes Google News:** SerpApi or Serper, priced per search. - **A dedicated news API:** NewsAPI.org or GNews, with filters and history. - **Free and quick:** `https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=&hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en` returns up to 100 items with title, link and date. - **Google's exact results as JSON:** SerpApi's Google News engine or Serper's `/news` endpoint. - **Production news feed:** GNews (from €49.99 a month, full content) or NewsAPI.org (from $449 a month). - **Bing News Search is gone too:** Microsoft retired its Bing Search APIs on August 11, 2025. ## Is there an official Google News API? **No, and there has not been one since 2016.** Google announced the deprecation of the News Search API in May 2011, together with its other single-purpose search APIs (Blog, Patent, Video and Image search), and the endpoints stopped working in February 2016. Google pointed developers to the Custom Search JSON API, which is itself closed to new customers and ends on January 1, 2027 ([details](/blog/google-custom-search-api)). Anything sold today as a "Google News API" is either the RSS feed, a scraper of news.google.com, or a different news index that happens to use the name. ## Google News RSS: the free option **Google News still publishes RSS feeds for searches, topics and locations, and they work without a key.** The search feed takes four parameters: ``` https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=nvidia+earnings&hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en ``` | Parameter | Meaning | |---|---| | `q` | The query; Google operators like `when:7d` and `site:` work inside it | | `hl` | Interface language, e.g. `en-US` | | `gl` | Country, e.g. `US` | | `ceid` | Country:language edition, e.g. `US:en` | When we called that URL on October 19, 2026, it returned **100 items**, each with a headline, the publisher, a publish date and a link. Three limitations decide whether RSS is enough: 1. **Links are Google redirects,** not the publisher's URL: each one points to `news.google.com/rss/articles/…`. You have to follow the redirect to get the article URL. 2. **No article text,** just the headline and source. 3. **No contract.** There is no SLA or published rate limit, and Google can change the format. Heavy automated polling gets throttled. ```python import feedparser # pip install feedparser url = "https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=nvidia+earnings+when:7d&hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en" for e in feedparser.parse(url).entries[:10]: print(e.published, "|", e.title, "|", e.link) ``` ## Getting Google News results through a SERP API **If you need what Google News shows, as JSON and with an SLA, a SERP API is the usual route. It carries the same scraping risk as any Google SERP data.** | Vendor | Google News support | Price per 1,000 | |---|---|---| | SerpApi | Google News engine, structured stories and topics | $25 down to $1.96 by plan ([pricing](/blog/serpapi-pricing)) | | Serper | `/news` endpoint with source and date | $1.00 down to $0.30 ([guide](/blog/serper-api-guide-2026)) | Google sued SerpApi in December 2025 over scraping its results, so if a News integration is core to your product, price in the supply risk; we cover the case in [the search API crackdown](/blog/search-api-crackdown-2026-serpapi-lawsuit-bing-shutdown). ## Is the Bing News API an alternative? **Not anymore.** Microsoft retired the Bing Search APIs, News included, on August 11, 2025, and closed new signups. Apps built on Bing News needed a replacement the same day. Our [Bing Search API alternatives](/blog/bing-search-api-alternatives) guide covers the migration paths. ## Google News API alternatives | Need | Use | Why | |---|---|---| | Free headlines for a prototype | Google News RSS | No key, 100 items per query | | Structured articles with filters | GNews, NewsAPI.org | Language, country, topic, date filters; history | | Full article text, commercial use | GNews Essential (€49.99/mo) | Full content on paid plans | | Exactly what Google ranks | SerpApi or Serper | Scraped Google News results | | An agent that reads the stories | RSS or a news API, plus an extraction API | Headlines alone do not answer questions | The full comparison with prices is in [best news APIs](/blog/best-news-api). ## From headline to article text **Most news projects stall at the same step: the feed gives a headline and a redirect link, and the model needs the article.** Keirolabs closes that step. `/extract` turns any article URL into clean markdown (3 credits), and `/search/content` searches the open web and returns ranked pages with their text in one call, which also catches press releases and filings a news index misses. The free tier is 1,250 credits a month with no card, enough to read a few hundred articles while you prototype.
